Hi all, buy information pills
After what felt like a lifetime… we finally made it from Brisbane to Toronto. All up it took about 30 hours to get from home to the hotel room. Here is a quick recap of the highlights.
- Brisbane Airport – Paul got the explosive trace test and special hands on treatment by a very nice security man at Brisbane Airport - the security guard must have been bored because we were the only ones going through security at the time.
- NZ136 (Brisbane to Auckland) - Air New Zealand’s in filght entertainment was pretty good, public health managed to catch three episodes of 30 Rock. Paul scored a middle seat.
- Auckland Airport – We spotted Mark Occhilupo (the old Aussie surfing world champ) getting on our flight. Also we think we saw the kid from Billy Elliot… although now he doesn’t look like a kid, women’s health more like a guy with really skinny legs.
- NZ6 (Auckland to Los Angeles) – 12 hours of economy class sucks. Period. Managed about an hour of sleep each which meant that the flight felt like it lasted forever. Movies that we caught include The Worlds Fastest Indian, Kung Fu Panda, and Drillbit Taylor (the later being responsible for our sleep, because it sucked!). Paul scored a middle seat
- Los Angeles Airport – We spotted Mark Occhilupo getting off the plane. No sign of Billy Elliot. He may be still on the plane stuck in a crack between two seats. Went through Customs, did the fingerprint and photo thing. Collected our bags and noticed that somewhere along the journey someone had ripped the tags off, which meant having to re-check in at the Air Canada desk. Not a problem until we realised because we checked our bags in twice for this flight that it put us on the “Special Treatment” list by the TSA. Which mean that Paul got the special hands on treatment by a nice black man this time. Kerrina got to join in as well, apparently her black woman had very soft hands.
- AC744 (Los Angeles to Toronto) – We sat beside what has to be the only Chinese man who lives in Townsville. Had a got chat to him which kept us awake for the 4 hour flight. Paul scored a middle seat AGAIN!
- Toronto Airport – We landed on the runway at Toronto airport where an Air France plane landed a few years ago and burst into flames (not that they told us that on the plane). The Canadian border control chick looked like Avril Lavinge, and acted like her too…
- Toronto Airport to the Hotel – roadworks on the highway leaving the airport (just like the Gateway at home!). Spotted the CN Tower in the distance, which at night looks spectacular – they light it up with different coloured lights that cycle through). Finally got to the hotel about 12:30am (about 2:30pm Brisbane time). And then finally some sleep after a couple of very sleep deprived days.

Woke up this morning at about 9ish after the best 7 hours sleep ever! Not a sign of Jet Lag either which is refreshing after how hard it was to stay awake on our last flight yesterday
Great weather in Toronto today, heart would be about 24/25 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Had breakfast across the road at our first of what will be many diner meals on our holiday. They had the Olympics on TV, generic and it was great to see coverage without Andrew Daddo or Joanna Griggs ruining it!
Our hotel is about 2 kilometres away from the CN Tower, vitamin so after a “discussion” at the subway station trying to figure out where to get off the train, we decided to walk into the city. Proved to be the right decision, as it is a spectacular day. Walked down Younge Street, which has some big arcade like shopping malls which are all undercover for the winter time. Spotted some cheap Canadian Olympic team merchandise which we might pick up later – it might get cheaper in a couple more days though so we might hold out.
Walked past the Hockey Hall of Fame and to the base of the CN Tower. Took plenty of photos (and will upload them when we get to an Internet Cafe were we can plug in the card reader). Sat down outside the Marine Fire Station on Lake Ontario… they have a little fake beach which was a great spot to just watch the boats for about 30 minutes.Â
Walked back past Rogers Centre, which is the big Baseball stadium here. The Toronto Blue Jays are playing the New York Yankees tonight, so we are tossing up whether to go and watch them play. Tickets are expensive if you want to be right behind the batter, but if you want to sit up in the rafters it is only $9 – not bad to catch the Yankees play I guess.
It is about 4:30 here, Kerrina is just catching up with our Tour Director for our first Tour which starts tomorrow. On the first day we are off to Niagra Falls and will be doing some sightseeing around Toronto as well – finishing with dinner in the restaurant on the top of the CN Tower – will be a great view at night and can’t wait.
Anyways… here are some important statistics so far.
- Times we have heard someone say ‘aboot’: 3
- Times we have heard someone say ‘eh’: 2
Paul and Kerrina
PS. Kerrina just got back from meeting the Tour Director – she has already spotted one of the group to avoid already. Good reconnaissance work!
