The University of Tres-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is a public university open to society and the world. It is the largest centre for the creation and dissemination of knowledge in northern Portugal and develops its work in close collaboration with other universities in the country, Europe and the world, as well as with the institutional and commercial environment. The University of Tres-os-Montes and Alto Douro promotes innovation and local and regional development with the aim of creating, transmitting and exchanging knowledge, promoting scientific dissemination, promoting the implementation of patents and consortia with companies and institutions. Universities in the interior of Portugal, such as the University of Tres-os-Montes and Alto Douro, should be the anchor of the attraction and attachment of the population and the levers to create dynamism and employment by playing their role in reducing regional asymmetries, in order to achieve a more cohesive and balanced development of the country. UTAD was the first university in the inland north of Portugal. Born in 1973 as an agricultural polytechnic, it grew as a university. Today, it offers more than 95 bachelor`s, master`s and doctoral degrees through its schools of agriculture and veterinary sciences, science and technology, life sciences and the environment, humanities, social sciences and health. As an institution, it has strengthened its relations with the city of Vila Real and the entire region and has been heavily involved in its development. It has transformed an old farmhouse into a university campus, which includes one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe, where you can see species from all over the world. By choosing areas of education and research that meet national needs and are not yet exhausted in the labour market, the university has also played an important role in the development of the region in which it finds itself, creating jobs and offering courses focused on the needs of the region and its population.

It is therefore an ecosystem of learning and skills development, composed of multidisciplinary knowledge, and an institution that evaluates and promotes close links between its 561 teachers, 400 collaborators and more than 6500 Portuguese students and more than 40 nationalities.
